Jonathan’s View

"Not many hill walkers visit Rogan’s Seat for pleasure, it is mainly a ticking exercise for Marilyn baggers or a quick detour from those taking the Coast to Coast. The small cairn at the summit is surrounded by a great expanse of peat hags so typical of the Pennines that lie to the north. It is not a great spot with the views seeming distant and almost insignificant due to the bleak foreground. This is a land for grouse shooting and thank goodness for that. Not because of any politics but the wide landrover tracks that criss cross the area make access somewhat more straightforward.

My first visit to Rogan’s Seat (and I defy many to say they have repeated the experience) was a late decision from the top of Gunnerside Gill, not a route I can really recommend although to be fair my stupidity was compounded by returning exactly the same way through the peat hags instead of using the landrover track that lies on its west side.

However I was determined to enjoy Rogan’s Seat just once and I certainly achieved this with a pleasant climb from Keld via Swinners Gill. Once on the plateau I made use of the landrover tracks. I carried on north from the the summit cairn and down west towards East Gill. The return along East Gill was rough but I was not complaining; somehow a climb of Rogan’s Seat should not be easy, all in all a tough day on the fells."

Routes up Rogan’s Seat

There is a choice of routes up Rogan’s Seat . They are shown on the map and described below. The GPX file describes my favourite route.

My Favourite Route

From Keld via Swinner's Gill

Height to Climb

430m (1,410ft)

Parking

SD 942773 Buckden, Car Park

  1. There is parking in Keld. Take the bridleway next to the church heading SW, cross the embryonic River Swale to join the Pennine Way, past Kisdon Force and follow the path for ½ km. A footpath forks left and passes through the remains of Crackpot Hall, a 2 story house of legend and mystery.  After Crackpot Hall the path bends NNE to remain above above Swinner Gill, before dropping to a footbridge after ½ km.
  2. The path now heads east alongside East Grain, passing some disused mining buildings, before climbing steeply out on to the moors. Join a landrover track on the moors and follow for a further 3/4km east to a gate and fence. Just past here the track divides, turn north/left and follow the track for 2km past some shooting butts and a small lodge to the high point. A small summit cairn with a pipe sticking out is 100 meters on the left perched on a peat hag.
  3. Return to the track and continue north through a gate before turning west. The ‘road’ finishes in a turning circle, carry on the rutted track past more shooting butts. After the last butt the tracks become less used and rutted. Just prior to reaching East Gill the track, now path, turns south and starts to contour the stream. The path is intermittent but keep to the contour (the stream becomes further away as it falls through a steep sided ravine). After 2 km cross a fence and as a 2nd fence is approached the path drops steeply and passes under the fence.
  4. From here the path is more clear, eventually passing through a gate and through a field back to the bridleway above the River Swale. Keld is barely 10 minutes walk from here.

Alternative Routes

From Ribblehead

From Gunnerside; A landrover track to the west of Gunnerside Gill makes a straightforward airy ascent of Rogan’s Seat (12km return) but the pleasure of climbing from Gunnerside lie in the gill where the industrial history of Swaledale can be explored at its best. However the crossing to Rogan’s Seat from the north end of the gill is unpleasant in trackless peat hags.

The route from Gunnerside is accessible via All Terrain wheelchairs as it is on excellent shooter tracks. Its a straightforward Dales 30 walk.

If you would like to enjoy the industrial heritage of Gunnerside Gill itself follow the river until you climb out of the valley towards the landrover track up Blind Gill (footpath)
